Quite like these;

Data visualisation outlining the cost of fuel around the world.

I particularly like adapted world maps that display a certain set of figures in relation to the rest of the world. I like the fact you can make comparisons for yourself, taking your own initiative and interpreting the information on your own.

“The Racial Dot Map” visualises the 2010 US Census data, where every individual person is represented by a single colour coded dot. The colour coding shows the racial groupings gathered by the census.

Above is an example of a set of data being transformed into a infographic so that the information is easier to take in and allow the viewer to compare across a given region.

The nature of design is changing, viewers are now users, therefore audience interpretation is everything. It is essential that the information is clear and concise. The idea of taking a set of data and creating something equally as important displaying that information in a different form really interests me, it leaves room for the viewer to interpret the information for themselves.

  1. would like to see more commentary on these beyond ‘quite like’. You’ve found two excellent examples of projects that reveal potent social, cultural and economic data but you haven’t demonstrated your critical awareness here. Look at the descriptors for critical awareness and then think what you might add to this posting to demonstrate a range of the descriptors below:

    3rd
    There is evidence of some analysis/evaluation and understanding of the most important contextual information, but little engagement in the discussion and debate, which is required for a deeper insight.

    2.2
    There is discussion, analysis and some reflection of the context demonstrating understanding of the essential issues and information. The application of knowledge and appropriate theory is evident in the most important aspects of the work.

    2.1
    There is considered discussion, analysis and reflection of essential and some wider contextual issues, demonstrating a sound understanding of all relevant information. Critical application of knowledge and appropriate theory is evident in the majority of the work.

    1st
