What is ‘taxonomy’?

A question that faced me in the module induction on Wednesday. First thing back from the summer and already I don’t know what’s going on. Maybe not the best start.. Back to the point.

So what is taxonomy? If you first type this into good old fashion Google, a strange biological definition comes up. However, although mainly used in biology, the definition isn’t so far from the general use of the word. Taxonomy is the study and practice of the classification of ideas, concepts, things, basically anything that can be put into a category. It also includes the study of the principles that underline the classification, so the theory behind it and the thinking as to why certain things fit into certain categories.
