- Before mid 1800′s was common to believe that people with mental illness was caused by the devil.

Post 1850′s
- science was progressing.
- people started to believe it was caused by diseases of the brain.
- realised that they may be able to be cured.
- led to more ethical treatments.
- led to asylums – mentally ill taken from jails.
