Design fiction is defined as a method of critical design that uses fictional and narrative scenarios to envision, explain and raise questions about the possible future for design and society. For example, Kelli Anderson producing an exact replica of the New York Times and handing it out and convincing people of the foreseeable future. The aim is to challenge the reality of the present and raise questions about design and society now.
Something to stop you running away with the sci-fi side of the future, ‘the future mundane’ can be applied.
1. The future mundane is filled with background talent.
(all the everyday stuff will still be there, and that’s what will make it more convincing.)
2. The future mundane is an accretive space.
(not everything is glossy. Think of layering between old and new.)
3. The future mundane is a partly broken space.
(not spotless, and maybe the mistakes is what will make the space more interesting.)
Carrying a disease through meat causes people to not trust supermarkets and only source their food locally. It means that there is little to no meat available and waste is monitored and rewarded for no waste.
Creating something between a 3D printer and a coffee machine, we created pods that can be inserted into the machine with veg based paste inside, that is then printed into food that is more familiar and more appealing. We thought this wasn’t too out there as we are close to having 3D printers print food and it wasn’t too far in advance so was believable.
